Make-up Protocol

Your main goal in putting on make-up is too emphasize your features when swimming your routine, NOT to make yourself look like a clown.

You'll need these basic waterproof items:

  1. red lipstick
  2. basic blush (find blush that doesn’t have a brush applicator, brushes make you look odd if they get wet)
  3. black eyeliner
  4. basic eye shadow that matches the main colors in your routine competition suit
  5. gentle make-up remover.

Additional items that are not a necessity: some kind of glitter eye shadow or eyeliner, lip liner, waterproof mascara.

Usually routines decided as a group what colors they are going to use and then all swimmers use that lipstick, eye shadow and so forth. You need to look the same.

**Becca's pet peeves about make-up:

  1. Not reapplying make-up after warm-up (lipstick is worn off, no sign of blush any more, etc.)
  2. Bright pink, bright orange or brown lipstick, for obvious reasons.
  3. Not using dark enough eyeliner and/or using heavy eyeliner on the lower lid resulting in raccoon eyes. Eyeliner should be dramatic on the upper lid extending out and up. (Older athletes can demonstrate for younger swimmers.)
  4. Squares of blush on cheeks, blush not rubbed in, not along cheekbones.
  5. Lipstick on teeth/braces.
